Carbon Dioxide

STEAM – round 3

This round we have been focusing on Carbon. Carbon is a very important and special element because every living thing is made out of carbon. If there isn’t any carbon there won’t be life on earth. Carbon is present in the atmosphere as the gas carbon dioxide (co2), which make up approximately 0.04% of the atmosphere. Related to that we also studied about the carbon cycle. Carbon is a virtually important molecule in the carbon cycle. The global moment of carbon between the abiotic environment, including the atmosphere and ocean and organisms, is known as the carbon cycle. The carbon cycle is what makes up life. Now I’ll you more about it. Carbon dioxide are from animal respiration, plant respiration, combustion, and Auto and factory emissions. Where does it go?. They go up to the atmosphere. How does it cycle?

  • Trees are the one who takes carbon dioxide and use it to make food. They absorbed carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. Animals then eat the food and carbon is stored in their bodies or released as CO2 through respiration. After trees eat the carbon dioxide then they will also release back the oxygen, which is what we use to breathe. We, human use oxygen to breathe and release back some carbon dioxide through farting.
  • Decomposer also plays an important role in the carbon cycle. It breaks down the dead organisms and returns the carbon in their bodies to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide by respiration. If there isn’t any decomposer, there will be less carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere and there would be less carbon dioxide for plants to take in for photosynthesis.
  • During the combustion of fossil fuel carbon is returned to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.  These are what I know about the carbon cycle.

We also did one experiment related to carbon. It is called the Black Snake experiment.

Processes of Making the Black Snake

  • Mix the sugar and baking soda together in one bowl or anything that you can use to mix something
  • Next, Pour the sand in another bowl and pour the Alcohol into the sand to wet it
  • Pour the sugar and soda mixture on the sand
  • At last, Ignite it with a match

Result

  • It creates the Blacksnake
  • The sugar needs something hot like fire to break down itself and I think sugar also need oxygen to break down itself. When oxygen is used, carbon dioxide and water vapor is released.
  • The baking soda also reacts with heat, so when the fire heat it, it produces the solid sodium carbonate that’s why it makes the snake looks solid.
  • Because my teacher told me that, Carbon dioxide is black, so carbon dioxide is what makes the snake black.
  • Altogether, these three reactions produce the solid components of the snake, color of the snake and hot gasses that expand the BLACKSNAKE!!

Try harder

Math-round 3

This round we’ve been focusing on decimal. I am so happy learning about this topic even though I am not that master at it. The decimal point is the most important part of a Decimal number. I’ve been learning how to multiply, substract, add, and divide the decimals by both whole number and the decimal itself. As long as you pay attention to your teachers while they are explaining, it won’t be hard to do. Sometimes there are lessons that you are good at and there are lessons that you are not good at, but if you just try hard a little bit, everything will be possible I promise. I first found it really hard to divide, substract, add, and multiply the decimals by decimals, but I found it easy after spending ten to twenty minutes every day learning about this lesson and I finally pretty good at it. Now, heads back to the lesson that I learned.

Multiplying decimal with whole number like 10, 100, 1000, 10000, 100000…………………

If you multiply any decimal number with 10, the strategy to solve this problem is to just move the point (.) one place to the right. The same thing with 100, the only difference is that, if there are two zeros in the 100 like that, you just have to move the (.) two places to the right. Note: you just have to count the zero and move the decimal point (.) as the number of the zeros.

This is the formula

* 10 move the (.) 1 place to the the right

* 100 move the (.) 2 places to the right

* 1000 move the (.) 3 places to the right

* 10000 move the (.) 4 places to the right

For Example:

12.13 * 10 = 121.3

12.13 * 100 = 1213

12.13 * 1000 = 12130

Dividing decimal with the whole number like 10, 100, 1000, 10000, 100000……………

Dividing decimal is not that different from multiplying decimal. The only thing is that is different is that, if you divide any number (without a decimal point) with 10, you just have to move the point (.) one place to the left. This is the formula that helps me every time I get stuck.

/ 10 move the (.) 1 place to the left

/ 100 move the (.) 2 places to the left

/ 1000 move the (.) 3 places to the left

/ 10000 move the (.) 4 places to the left

Now you would have a question about how to multiply decimal with a number that doesn’t have zero, but it has something like this:  12, 34, 45, 65, ……………

In words, it is pretty hard to explain, but I have the example below that will help you to understand it better. For Example:

14.6448 / 12 = 1.2204

146.448 / 12 = 12.204

1464.48 / 12 = 122.04

14644.8 / 12 = 1220.4

Adding and Subtracting decimal with decimal and the whole numberThe thing that you need to do while subtracting and adding decimal with whole number is like the example below

  999.6                   999.6

–                            +

   673                      673

________          ________

   326.6                  1672.6

The only difference when subtracting decimal with decimal is that, you have to place the decimal point at the same place. For example:

999.6                         999.6

–                               +

673.2                         673.2

_______                 ________

326.4                       1672.8

Math may not teach me how to add love or subtract hate, but it gives me hope that every problem has a solution.

What’s My Name?

My Pretty Short Name

When I was young I lived upon my mother’s milk as I couldn’t eat grass and on my father’s shoulder as I couldn’t walk. Until the day that I began to walk, the name Ena is everywhere in my ears, so I started to realized that my name is Ena. As soon as I was old enough to understand things I started to know my full name, Ena Im. My name, Ena Im is a pretty short name that has no meaning in both Khmer and English. After watching, seeing, noticing, and deserving how good Ena is by her action in the Filipino movie called The Promise, my parents started to like Ena so much that they wanted their daughter to have the same character like her, so her name has chosen to be my name.

Now I have my name, but the feeling that I want to change is everywhere in mind when I go to school hearing other student’s names. I felt like my name is too short and has no meaning while others have. Ena Im is too short for me, I wanted another name like Mony Sereyroth, a name that has a beautiful meaning, peaceful and beautiful sunflowers. Even though I had a feeling that I don’t like my name, but I also thought of something positive about my name. If I think about it positively, I would say “it doesn’t matter whether it is short or long, and meaningful or meaningless, the only thing that matters is whether I am a good person or not.” But still, it has no meaning.

On January 12th, 2019 is the day that I realized the meaning of my name. Ena was my parent’s favorite character’s name and now it is mine. Ena was a child of God just like me who was born as a child of God. She lived in a poor family, but she tried hard in her studying until she became a successful businesswoman. She went through a lot of challenges before becoming a successful businesswoman and having an infinite love that no one could break them apart. The love between her and Angelo would never end even though Angelo’s family doesn’t like a poor person like Ena. She loved Angelo by her heart and not by seeing Angelo as a rich man. The way that she tried to share everything that she has to other people on the island, make my parents like her more and more. Her sweetness, faithful, ambitious and compassionate convince and persuade my parents to name me, Ena Im.

I would like to baptize myself again so that I can have positive thinking about my name. The quote that says “Don’t judge the book by its cover” now come to me. I always remind my friends about this quote when they forgot it, but now it is my turn to remember this quote and let my friend remind me back because I don’t want to judge other things specially my name ever again. I would never forget my parents advises about Ena experiences and behavior. The road to success of my life will be open for me as long as I take Ena’s behaviors as the model.

Sharing is Loving! Don’t be IONIC, Be COVALENT

Chemical bonding

STEM – round 2

Chemical bonding is one of the most interesting topic to learn about. Basically, a chemical bonding is a force of attraction between atoms or ions. It occurs when atoms share or transfer valence electrons. Valence electrons are the electrons in the outer energy level of an atom. There are three types of Bonding. One is the Ionic Bonds, second is the Covalent Bonds, and the third one is the Metallic Bonds

  • Ionic Bond
    •  An ionic bond is the force of attraction that holds together positively charged ions. It forms when atoms of a metallic element give up electrons to atoms of a nonmetallic element. Metals “want” to give up electrons, and nonmetals “want” to gain electrons. Ionic bonds are really strong.
    • Ionic compounds form crystals instead of molecules. Ionic bonds are strong and the crystals are rigid. As a result, ionic compounds are brittle solids with high melting and boiling points.
  • Covalent bonds
    • Covalent bond is when two elements share the electrons with each other. They share electron to form molecule, and two of the electron is called double bond.                                                                                                            Note: They only share when they need to be share, and not always the same elements can share, but different elements can also be share.
  • Metallic bonding
    • Metals mean anything that are hard or conductive, they don’t really melt in a room temperature, but they will be melt in when the temperature is 800°c or 100°c. Metal observe the heat very fast and it conducts strong heat, too.
    • A Metallic bond is a sharing of electrons between many atoms of a metal element.

These are what I know about chemical bonding based on what my teacher have taught me and some of my own research.

Did you know that Hydrogen bond is the weakest?. I know the answer, that is because they are easily and rapidly formed and then broken under normal biological condition.

Note: Rapidly means very quickly 🙂

If you Believe in Yourself, Anything is Possible

English Literacy–Round 2

English Literacy has always been my favorite class because without it, you cannot make sense or communicate your understanding of a subject and it is even more important today because of how our economy and society are changing. Literacy teaches me to read, view, write, design, speak and listen in a way that allows me to communicate effectively. Our theme for this round is about Social and Environmental justice. We have been discussing and learning a lot about this topic such as, what is environmental justice/injustice, how is pollution related to inequality, and why and how does injustice affect me as a citizen. Social injustice is basically about the elimination of various human rights from a broad variance of unfair treatment due to their race, gender, age, religion, nationality, education, mental or physical ability, etc………………

As we are learning about all of those, we completed the Hyperdoc and make some discussions about how the power plants affect people, and we found out that most of the power plants in the state are located in a place where the minority groups stay.  We also did something called the Landfill Case Study which is about answering questions related to the environmental justice. Our teacher, Hannah has given me the Ethiopia country to research and answer some questions related to the topic that we are learning. Those questions are what is this country’s relationship with trash?, is there waste management? If so, what is it?, what is the government action?, and are there landfill communities?. We did this type of activity so that we can get more comprehensions about the environmental injustice, how does it look like in the other countries compared to our country and to understand furthermore about the government reaction to the environmental justice in their country.

Besides that, we are currently learning how to write an argumentative essay and surprisingly we are writing it, too. Before getting to the basic of learning it, we also did something called the Philosophical chair to brainstorm and to get a taste of what is it like?. Writing an argumentative essay is not easy and there are many steps of writing it including an introduction, body paragraphs, and the conclusion.

Introduction

  • Title needs to be interesting and effective
  • Hook is the part that you are grabbing the reader’s attention
  • Background Information is to give a reader a heads up of what you are going to talk about and understands the situation or problem you’re talking about
  • Thesis is a sentence in which you state your main argument and a brief description of how you will prove it.

Body Paragraphs

  • is a group of related sentences about a particular topic or idea directly relating to the thesis

Conclusion

  • is to restate the main argument. It reminds the reader of the strengths of the argument

To sum up, it is not an easy thing to do, but I finally get through it because

I always believe in myself!.

Word Problems are Really Useful

Math–Round 2

As we start a new round, the lesson is also new. This round is a little bit different from the last round. Last round we were focused on Whole Numbers, More Calculation With the Whole Number, Fractions and Multiply and Divide Fractions, but for this round we are mostly focusing on Geometry which are mostly related to the area and perimeter of the polygons like, rectangles and triangles. While we are learning geometry, the code.org is also introduced to our class. Code.org is just something that is related to math that we could learn outside of the class. To add on that, Khan Academy is my favorite website to learn math because it has a very good sound when we finish the lesson. It also provides us some videos that teach about the lesson we are doing when we are stuck at some point or we don’t know what the lesson is about.  It is a really great website to learn math. On the last unit of the book, we learned about ratio. A ratio says how much of one thing there is compared to another thing. We need to make sure that the number is in a simplest form as we would do with fraction (The simplest form must be in a whole number). For example, the ratio of men to women is six to three, so we would write it as 6:3. We call the “:” as “to”. Finally, because this number can be simplified, so it would be 2:1 or two to one. To make sure we understand the content well, we did a lot of fun projects and games relating to recipes, budgeting, shirt colors and number of staffs and students in school. We also did some word problems related to ratio to make a clear understanding of what it is and to know how to do both exercises and word problems. To me, word problems are a little bit difficult from a normal exercise, but I found out that word problems are really useful because they help me both with the math and the words usage with math. I found this lesson really fascinating and more exhilarating for a new math book, 5B.

Exploration round 2 (Cambodian traditional food)

Cambodian traditional food is my exploration for this round. The purpose of this exploration is to bring back the old Khmer food and to gather people’s stories about how Cambodian foods impact on them. We have been brainstorming a lot about how to ask a good question so that we can get good stories from the interviewee before we went on a trip. Siem Reap is one of the places we went to. Before we went on a trip, we were assigned into three teams, Photo essay, Video, and Journalism. I was a part of the Photo essay team but doesn’t mean that I cannot join the Video or the Journalism team, we all need to learn those skills and if we know it already we can practice more to get better. On a trip, we got to interview a lot of chefs in an individual restaurant that serves traditional foods. They were really friendly and welcomed us warmly. I have been taking a lot of pictures while I was on a trip, but I realized that I didn’t involve much in asking people question while interviewing, so I started to set a goal for myself that I am going to ask people lots and lots of questions and I won’t be afraid of talking to people anymore. Finally, I achieved the goals that I have set for myself, I asked people a lot of questions and got a lot of stories from the interviewee. I really encourage everyone to set a goal for your life or anything that you are doing because Goals Help Us Believe In Ourselves. Setting goals for yourself is a way to fuel your ambition. Goal setting isn’t just about creating a plan for your life and holding yourself accountable, it’s also about giving us the inspiration necessary to aim for things we never thought possible.

That is what I have learned from my lovely teacher, Cindy. Back on the Photo essay that is a job that I was assigned to be, basically a photo essay is a collection of images with some caption or it can be a short paragraph, too. So far I have created two photo essay which was written about the Khmer rice noodle and the Bamboo Sticky Rice. Click here to see my first product and click here to see my second product.

Computer Science and Multimedia-Round 2

This my second round of learning Computer science. This round we are mostly focusing on Photography basic. To take a good a picture, we might need some tips and some basic of it.

Before learning the Photography basic, I didn’t know that there are different types of camera. I just that, we take a camera to take pictures. After learning all of those, I started to realize that there are two types of camera, DSLR and Mirrorless. Inside the DSLR there is a mirror inside the camera body that reflects the light coming in through the lens up to a prism, and into the viewfinder, for you to preview your shot. Mirrorless is different, but they both are cameras. Inside the Mirrorless, light passes through the lens and right onto the image sensor, which captures a preview of the image to display on the rear screen. Those are the difference that I have learned and understand. Camera setting is one of the most important material that we must use in our camera. Those setting are Exposure, Shutter speed, Aperture, and ISO.

Exposure is the amount of light that reaches your camera sensor and determines how light or dark your photo will be. There are three things that affect exposure and they are Shutter speed, ISO and Aperture.

  • Shutter speed

Shutter speed is responsible for two particular things: Changing the brightness of your photo and creating a dramatic effect by either freezing action or blurring motion. It is the Length of time the shutter is open to allow light in. Essentially, it’s how long your camera spends taking a photo. Shutter speed is typically measured in a fraction of a second. For example, 1/4 means a quarter of a second, while 1/250 means one-two-hundred-and-fiftieth of a second (or four milliseconds). If the shutter speed is double, double the amount of light comes in and it affects how motion is captured

  • ISO

ISO is simply a camera setting that will brighten or darken a photo. The definition of it is how sensitive your camera is to light. If the number of your ISO is high, the brighter your photo will be. ISO helps you to capture images in dark place or environment, but if a photo taken in a high ISO, it will show you a lot of grain, also known as a noise, and might be usable. Note: Best to keep ISO low, only increase when Aperture and Shutter speed adjustments are not enough.

  • Aperture

The Aperture refers to the size of the opening in the lens through which the light enters the camera. F-stop is one of the main tools in Aperture. A depth of field refers to the blurring. To control the depth of field of the image, you need the aperture (F-stop). When you change the F-stop value, you change the size of the opening. The funny fact about F-stop is that, the higher the F-stop, the smaller the opening. It means that the smaller F-stop, the more light will come in, but the larger F-stop, the less amount of light will come in. The wide aperture (i.e. f/1.8) has a shallow depth of field. A narrow aperture (i.e. f/11) has a deep depth of field. This down below is an example:

After, learning all of these basic, my taking picture skill is also change. These are some pictures that I have taken after learning and I think they are great pictures.

My funny memory

English Literacy-round 1

English Literacy is one of my most favorite classes. It is my very last class. I have learned lots and lots of knowledge from this class. One thing that I like the most in this class is that we always get to do a test every Monday. The test is about the ten vocabularies that the teacher gave us to study one week before. On Monday, when we finished the test, our teacher gave us another ten vocabularies to study and we have another test. The test helps me a lot because I always learned ten English vocabularies every week. This helps me a lot with my English.

I have also learned how to write my mini personal narrative. This narrative can be in the form of a story or a poem. I chose to write a poem because it packs a lot of meaning and emotions and we don’t have to be a professional to write it.

The poem describes a memory I’ve done with my family and in the church.

A poem thanking the church for the Christmas day

For all of the presents

You put under the tree,

For all of the time

You picked after me……….

For the time that you took

Off training wheels

For the night that you made me

My favorite meals

The delicious meal that you made for everybody

Spending the whole morning  to make it yummy

Collaboration and make it easy

Everybody enjoy  those super delicious foods ever

For the time that you made me happy

Playing games without wearing a nappy

Fun fun fun and pee pee pee

Laughing with no limit

The game ended in five minutes

I got zero point because of the unlimited laughing

For the time that you made me excited

The big present that you created

It makes me really interested

Because it was created by you

For the time that you encourage me

Make me strong

Teach me to sing a song

All of that,

Make my life a window for the light to shine through

And a mirror to reflect God’s love To all I meet. Amen

Last but not least

I sincerely thank you for the Christmas day

I really enjoy it, by the way

I want it to last forever

But, I love it anyway

How I change Cambodia

Our world is changing every day and as people in Cambodia, we also have to change to catch up with the modernization of the rest of the world to make our country better. Being a student at the Liger Leadership Academy has changed my mind to think of creating change in Cambodia. From what I have learned and what I have done in this school, I think these are the things that I change my country so far.

Technovation

To change our own country is not easy, but if you can change it little by little, our country will develop more and more.

The Liger Leadership Academy has given an opportunity to all of the juniors girls to participate in Technovation. Technovation is one of the programs that allow girls to participate more in technology and to learn the necessary skills to become tech entrepreneurs and leaders.

I am one of the students who had the opportunity to participate in Technovation because I believe that girls should be more involved in Technology, especially coding. Girls who code, Boys who cook. We went to Phounment school every Sunday to study and learn more about coding. Before we get into coding, we have to learn how to access our app idea first. For example: learn how to identify a problem in our community and create a mobile app solution to address that problem. We also learned how to communicate the ideas and translate them into a fully launched business. We have only three months to do it and only on Sundays. For those three months, my team came up with an idea to create an app called Farmer’s Market. Farmer’s Market is an app that solves the poverty problem in Cambodia. Did you know that there are many people are farmers in Cambodia? They grow their plants by not using chemicals, but the problem is that they don’t have a market to sell their agricultural products such as vegetables and fruits. Our app will help those farmers. When farmers download our app, they can post information about their fruits or vegetables that they want to sell. When any farmers post the information, the customers and people that use our app will see and if they want to buy something, they can contact the seller by phone number. How can our app help people?  Our app is like a market, where farmers can sell their product any time they want. They don’t have to go to the physical market and search for customers themselves. Some farmer’s farm can be really far from the market, so they can’t go to sell their product easily. If they use our app, they can just post it and the customers will buy their product really easy.

Poverty is one of the biggest problems in Cambodia, but our app can help them. Farmer’s Market change farmers life.

Geography Trip ( How liger students change Cambodia )

For the first day, we have been to many places that are fascinating and beautiful. One place that I really interested in the most is in Kroches province which is Koh Trong Island. There are many special things about it. People that live on that Island said, the soil is really good with a lot of nutrient for plantation to grow. The plant that most of the people grow and the most valuable is pomelo. The pomelo in Koh Trong is really different from other pomelo that doesn’t grow on Koh Trong. It is more delicious and sweater that other pomelo.  We also had a chance to eat that pomelo. It tasted super delicious. I never ate that kind of delicious fruit before. After we went to Koh Trong to eat pomelo and collected the information, we went back to Kroches city. We stayed in a green guesthouse. That house is really beautiful and hygiene. When we went to the guesthouse, we didn’t take a shower and eat dinner yet, so we have to do it. After we took a shower, we went to eat dinner in a restaurant. The foods that we ate was so delicious with a good serve. Liger students are the only eater that cleaned and prepared everything that we ate, for example: we putted of all the dishes in order, cleaned the table, took the dishes to clean, prepared and cleaned everything on the table. It shows that, Liger students are really responsible for everything that they did, sensitive and helpful to people around them.  Even though we ate foods by paying money, but when we leave, we have shown a really respectful to the owner of the restaurant by saying “Thank you for the foods”. When we do those kind of things and leave by saying “Thank you for the foods”, the owner show her face expression by smiling and said “I really appreciate that”. This is Liger students. After eating, we went back to the guest house and make a discussion about the informations that we got. We worked with each other really hard, communicate with each other well and talk to each other nicely. When one of us did something wrong or make someone felt bad, we always talk to them and try to find solutions. We always keep the six core values in our mind in everytime we went outside or somewhere else. Those six core values are Integrity, ingenuity, stewardship, determination, optimism and appreciation. These core values are extremely meaningful to us because it is a part of our life. For the seven days of Geography, we have done a really good job and came back with a big smiling face because we have more informations to put in the book and have been to many places that we never seen before.

Robotic (EXPLORATION) Changing Cambodia

Robotic is one of my favorite exploration. The purpose of doing the exploration is to join the first lego league competition in Singapore. The topic of this competition is about Hydrodynamic which means we are going to use our robot to do some missions about water and give a presentation about water too. In this exploration, we don’t just study about robots and presentation, but we also learn how to communicate with each other. We only have seven weeks to do all of those things, but we were able to do it. During our exploration class, we found out that water is one of the problems in Cambodia and that there are two types of water that can affect people. One is the Contaminated water and the other is Arsenic. There are two teams of this exploration. I was part of one of the teams that was working on the Contaminated water. We see that Contaminated water comes from humans and factories. People throw their trash into water without thinking deep of how it will affect marine life and their life. Some people may  see trash on the water and rather than find ways to remove the trash from the water, they would throw more trash in instead. They think that “there is only a little bit of  trash in the water, so if I throw in one more trash, it will not make a difference”. Everything start from one. If people keep saying that, it will become a habit soon and the country will never further develop. There are trash bins where people can throw their trash in; don’t just throw trash in anywhere that you want because it can affect yourself too. Water is one of the many resources that humans need to survive, so if the water becomes contaminated, there won’t have be any clean water to drink. There are many kind of germs in contaminated water which can cause diseases. You can get many types of diarrheal diseases, including Cholera, and other serious illnesses such as Guinea worm disease, Typhoid, and Dysentery. All of those diseases are really dangerous and they cause 3.4 million deaths each year. So, if you want to stay alive, you shouldn’t throw your trash to water. Not only does throwing a trash can affect your life, but the wastes from the factory also make your water become contaminated, too. The wastes contain many bacterias that are dangerous. When you drink it, you can get diarrhea really easily. I hope that all of the factories around the world will find another way of keeping their wastes rather than release it to water since it can affect people life. Contaminated water also affects the marine life. Marine is a part of our life. Why? Because they provide important ecosystem services such as the provision of food, medicines, and livelihoods. They also support tourism and recreational activities around the world. Marine life can change our country too, so you shouldn’t throw the trash to water or release the wastes to water. Clean water is the best natural remedy that helps people. These are all of the pieces of information that we got to present to the judges in Singapore.  After the presentation, judges said, “We are proud of your presentation on how to solve the problems and present with your confidence ”. We were really excited when we heard those words from those judges mouths. We have a really confident in our team though sadly, we didn’t win, we said “Win is not what we want, but what we want is our communication and to experience and we will win later ” One special thing about our robotic team is that we are the only Cambodian team to went to represent about Hydrodynamics in Cambodia.
